They make a lot of products for dogs that should never see the light of day, even though they are popular snacks and are available on store shelves. Most keep the dog busy for a long time, so the owner can enjoy life in peace. Although the damage caused by those does not appear immediately, it destroys the dog's body in the long term. The chemicals in it cause kidney damage, obesity, cancer, and diabetes, among others. Even if the 2-year-old dog doesn't seem to be sick, as he gets older, the problem will emerge more and more.
There are countries where food produced for pets is not considered a consumable product (since it is not consumed by humans), so they are not tested. Anything can get into these foods, such as bacteria and viruses, just as untested meat (animals that have died due to disease, etc.), and modifying substances (dyes, bleaches, etc.). That's why it's best to buy reliable, high-quality treats, or to check the ingredients on the snack's packaging.
To avoid:
Leather chews of any shape and type: This is one of the most dangerous and avoidable treats you can buy for your dog. These leather chews usually come from the part between the skin and the fat of cows, which the leather industry can no longer use, so they are sold as products for food-making companies. This part is usually chemically separated from the skin, which is bleached and dried. It may be colored to give it a more natural "meaty" look, which catches people's eyes better. Finally, the desired shape is achieved with the help of glue. Even if it is produced in a completely natural way, free of all kinds of chemicals, it is still dangerous, as it is difficult for the animal to chew it, so they prefer to tear off pieces and swallow it. This can partially damage the esophagus, but it can also cause a blockage in the digestive system, which can only be treated with surgery. A great alternative: Beef leg bone. Attention! Raw pork is forbidden because it causes an Aujesky-type disease! Also, a great alternative is the completely organically dried treats of animal origin, such as chicken feet, hairy rabbit ears, and other body parts, which are also healthy and help the functioning of the intestinal system.
Cheap products that contain only animal by-products: In such treats, the animal by-product means products that cannot be used for human consumption, such as the beaks and feathers of chickens. These are usually only found in small quantities in the product because the majority are usually flour and preservatives. These products also contain salt as a flavor enhancer, which should also be avoided. A great alternative: is 100% dried meat, which can even be prepared at home in the oven. (Except pork and venison)
Ingredients that are not included, or in small quantities: The first page of the packaging of most products is usually a scam, the listed ingredients, such as salmon, duck, beef, etc. it is not found in the ingredients list on the back of the packaging. These are usually just marketing ploys to get people to buy. Or if it is presented in it, its proportion is only minimal, and it is not meat. Be sure to read the ingredients on the packaging to see if it really contains the animal ingredient listed on the first page. But still, the best alternative is dried meat prepared at home, which can be made from salmon, duck, beef, or any special meat. (Except pork and venison)
Too many preservatives and flavor enhancers: If, in addition to the ingredients, the ingredient list contains a lot of words that I don't understand, I avoid those products Tthe majority of these contain flavor enhancers, preservatives, or glucose (sugar), which can also cause obesity.
E102, E110, E132, E129, or the dyes: These dyes increase the risk of allergies in dogs, which has almost become a modern disease in the dog population. It also affects the behavior of dogs, which has been proven to increase bad habits. Although E129 has been banned in most European countries, it is still used in many places and has been linked to cancer.
Bones: Although bones are healthy for dogs and an excellent treat, there are some things you should be aware of. An example of this is cooked bone, which is forbidden to give to the dog, the cooked bone cannot be digested in most cases, so it causes the most blockages that lead to surgery. Also, the cooked chicken bone breaks into splinters that easily pierce the esophagus. Never give your dog pork bones, Aujesky's disease is deadly! In the case of a raw bone, it is best to buy a beef upper leg or other large bone that the dog can chew to clean his teeth, but not swallow. As soon as the bone starts to break off, it is worth throwing it away. Only experienced BARF/PREY feeders should be asked how to give the small/medium bones, that a dog can potentially swallow without chewing.
